John - this was covered before in a topic on this site - you may want to use the search function to uncover more info, plus check the technical articles on the homepage, which should have some relevant information:

I would get an experienced windscreen fitter to do it.
If he cracks it, he pays for the new one!

My 230sl has just been repainted in a modern body shop. Even he got a windscreen fitter to come out and remove the screen. It has yet to be refitted.

John:  Hi, it's Pete Lesler.  I have taken a number of windshields out without destroying them, but repacing them is a job best left for the professionals.  I have seen it done about six times.  They use a rope and lots of liquid dawn as a lubricant.  The garnishh moldings should be inserted in the rubber and if at all possible, the wood should be installed prior to winshield replacement, although, I have slipped the wood in afterwards.

I am certain you can get a winshield installer to come to your home or the restoration shop.

When I had my car resprayed about two years ago I replaced the windshield at the same time. At the body shop, I had a specialist come out who did this job and it sure looked like an acquired skill, not something I would want to do. He charged me $50 ...

I too had a new winshield recently installed by a pro.  I received both installation tips and advice to go this route from fellow members.  I opted for the easy route.  The pro was experienced and quite fast.  However, I found it very easy to replace the wood after the glass went in.  Leaving freshly refinished wood in place seemed a bit risky as the rubber seal is tight against it, and there would be little or no room to work the rope to pull it into position without possible damage.
