The subject of this topic is "Images" not "Photos". This photo forum has lots of 'photos' but very few 'images'. By "image" I mean a shot where the setting, lighting, the angle of view are more important than the car itself; a 'photo' shows something, an 'image' sets a mood. (Am I a romantic or what?)
I don't claim to have any photographic talent but here are two (crude) attempts at 'image' making of the 280 SL. Some of you can do a lot better I'm sure. I'd like to see us make and post more "images".
(In this photo forum, I'd call the second attachment in Gerhard's 05 July "Color Codes" reply an "image".)

Richard,
Is the Medieval castle behind your car the place where you and Doug do your weekly board meeting?
Bob Geco
-----------
Reply from Richard:
Bob: Doug (Kim) and I do not have weekly board meetings, we sometimes have bored meetings!
The castle is an attempt by a 19th century US millionaire to duplicate a European style in the US. There are a number of these "castles" in Newport, Rhode Island; and along the Hudson Valley in New York. The one behind the car is one of several along the North Shore of NY's Long Island. This one is on the Sands Point Preserve, about 25 miles east of NYC.

Richard,
Hello. In your "mbsunset.jpg" image, it appears that there is a large tree growing from your parcel shelf! It's personal preference, but I don't like to see things lined up, symmetrical, or otherwise geometrically aligned in photos, excuse me, images. It will be interesting to see how many aspiring artists we have!
How's are these?

Good idea Richard!
I hope this attached picture reaches the level of "image". It's not a 280 SL, it's a 250 SL close to a lake (maybe you could edit the subject of this topic to "Images of Pagodas" or similar, in order to open this interesting topic also to 230 and 250 SL). I took this photo during a meeting of the recognized Spanish MB Club, in the Pyrenees of Aragón.
Best regards,

Hi all,
Always enjoy seeing new "images" here. Is it an idea to start a photo archive with lots of detailed pics for the owners restoring their SL's. I am planning to start this fall (October) and could use some detailed pics to see how things should be. Bought myself a nice book at De Slegte (The original Mercedes SL by Laurence Meredith) for only 7 euro. Lots of good pics and a chapter on restoring SL's.

Maybe it's just a "photo", but I think the lighting that comes from the beautiful forest La Fajeda d'en Jordà (Olot-Girona-Catalunya-Spain), covering a nice group of classic Mercedes cars (with 3 Pagodas), could merit to be in this "images" topic.

I like this image taken about aweek after I bought my Pagoda. In a way, it shows how happy I was and a kind of nostalgy of the sixties,my 230 sl is a -64 model,aa image in a mood of "come on , let's twist again":
http://membres.lycos.fr/kulta2004kulta/slc%20debout%20redim.jpg
In march, when the snow was melting, I took this image of my pagoda surrounded by the trees:
http://membres.lycos.fr/kulta2004kulta/230%20ds%20sapins%20redim.jpg
and this one has in the background a valley between the 2 mountains that reminds the shape of the pagoda roof, don't you think?:

It looks like a 408/181 duo-tone like mine but it has the apparently standard tan colored interior (can't tell form the pictures if it is Tex or leather). A 5-sp in a '65? Sounds like a retrofit! I thought it wasn't even available until the final weeks of 230SL production, and rare even on a 250 or 280SL!

I was doodling about with some of the shots I took at the Tidal Basin in D.C. last month to see if any of them would work as a desktop background. In Windows XP you have the choice to Tile (which zooms into to the upper left hand quadrant of the picture to fill the screen), Stretch (to make the photo fit the screen, no matter what its original shape may have been), or Center (which zooms into the center of the picture to fill the screen). Quite by accident this is how one of the shots appeared when I chose Center. It makes a dandy Desktop background and isn't half bad as an "image," either!

I like Richard's "image" vs "photo" idea.
It reminds me of the "film" vs "movie" discussions I have with friends
in the entertainment biz.
Possibly this older shot may fit the definition of an "image".

May be cheating a bit but I kinda liked what Photoshop did with a Pagoda image when "texturized"

P.S. Yes Jackson, your posting is certainly an "image" and deserves a place in this collection.

Note the orange peel behind the plate, totally absent on the well-prepared paint elsewhere. Amanda, plug those holes around the licence plate somehow.
Aside from that nice IMAGE; I love the dappled shade/sun on the car.

I like the play of light on the trunklid and the sharp focus - good shot!
I think Amamda's car is a Euro model - the rear fog light, chrome trim between the bumper blades and the wide license plate mounting holes point to this. Personally, I'd get one of the wide chrome European style license plate mounts behind the California plate and mount some German auto club badges on either side of the plate. That'd use the holes, hide the paint and dress up the car, all in one shot!

Beautiful shot! Why are the sun visors gone?
-
Darn! Thought you wouldn't notice on the sunvisors! I could make up a great story on how artistically they would mess up the shot, but truth be told, I had taken them off to do some cleaning of the chrome. Can't get anything by you guys!

Edward Hopper was famous for his paint and watercolor images of coastal Maine. He did deveral paintings of this light house. He also was famous for depicting many of his subjects as if one were viewing them through a window. He even did a few watercolors of cars along the Maine coast, but I don't think he lived long enough to have done one with a Pagoda. Neverless, My first thought when I saw this image was how much it resembled a Hopper work (for instance, one of hallmarks of Hopper's style was his use of bright colors and stark contrasts; another was to paint the telephone poles, but never show the wires that linked them) - good work!
-
Mike - great pattern recognition with Hopper's work - it is striking similar when you go back & forth between the two images. I'm sure he also took down the curtains in his window (i.e. the sunvisors) when he painted his art!

OK, so how did you drop the car in position on the grass without leaving tire tracks (or, do you live in a climate where that you can leave an open car out on the lawn for several days to let the grass grow up around the wheels without worrying about dust or precipitation accumulation)? ;^)

Must have just been springy grass. I just backed up into position.

Doug,
Yes, it does look similiar.
Actually the picture was taken on one of my family trips to Europe.
This one was taken in Salzburg Austria.
I'll be heading out there this Sept. 2008 with my new fiancee.

Has your fiancee passed the "Pagoda test" - holds a wrench and a drop light, doesn't complain when you buy cool car stuff, and likes to go for long drives with the roof down, without complaining about her hair? 8)

"The 250 has a 280 visiting for a bit. They're comparing notes! 280 is a little jealous of the 250's jewelry, but the 250 is a little jealous of the 280's shine!"
Have they told you that or are you just quessing?
-
Wow, your workshop looks like a luxury workshop.
Including pictures on the wall, I like the "Dummies" poster.
Given the reflection in the chrome there is much more to see in your workshop.

Hey John. Maybe some of the next 150K miles will be with the car off the trailer... :D
What a thing of beauty! Thanks for sharing!
-
Hello:
Well I'm off for a two week vacation where you won't be able to find me but I must be my usual self and leave a possibly annoying message.
I started this thread some years ago. The opening posting clearly says this is not for regular photos...it was for artistic, unique images.
Pix of cars and parts, even if a Perfect #10 car should not be here but should be posted on another newly created topic in this forum if you want to follow the spirit and intent of this specific thread.
I fear some have misinterpreted the esthetics and hijacked the thread...have posted photos that are not (in my opnion) particularly artistic, very nice cars, etc. but not the unique, artsy compositions that this thread called "Images" was intended for.
Do I ask for voluntary removal and move to another thread? Do I start a new 'Images" thread? Do I give up?
Think about it, if you care.

Sorry to offend. All my "non-image" related pics removed. Of course, one man's "pic" may be another's "image." But, it's your thread. Let me know if you want the others of my friend's and my car removed. Have a great trip.

That's what amazes me most, I don't think this car has ever been on a trailer. Vince drove it everywhere, the last big trip being a 1K mile drive in driving rain. Maybe that's why it's so clean underneath. Actually, Vince would do cosmetic maintenance along with his mechanical. So, if a part(s) was out, he would refinish it and put it back to "original" from photo documentation he kept. I've driven the car about 1K miles this year.
The photographic images have been moved to the "pictures of a 113" thread.

Hi John,
What's really nice to know and see is that you can own, and drive these beautiful cars and they can still look good (as long as you maintain them and keep 'em clean!). I guess this means that I need to pull mine out of the garage after I get it started again... :D
Nice pics!
Bob :)

Here's an image that deserves to be in this thread of distinctive Pagoda photos.
The car belongs to Jeff Garner...1970 280SL...Sandy Beige Metallic.
Photo was taken in front of a vintage gas station in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The gas station is in the Registry of National Historic places. I think the car should also be in an Historic Registry.
Richard M, for Jeff Garner

I had completely forgotten about this thread - thanks for drawing our attention to it Richard - I'll try to 'live up to it' by taking a few shots myself this weekend.
By the way, not too many know that it was Richard who originally got this website up and running ...
