I am thinking of replacing my oil bath air filter with a paper filter.
Would someone be able to give me the exact dimensions of the typical paper air filter.
diameter = ? inches or millimetres
height = ? inches or millimetres
thanks

Speaking of Air filters, I opened up the air filter canister to my 69 280SL for the first time and discovered to my shock that it was completely dry. I looked up in my original owners manual to determine how much oil to add and it said "The air filter paper element should never be oiled nor moistened." Then it gave my explicit instructions on cleaning it with compressed air. When were the air filters changed from an oil bath type to a paper element type and is there any way to tell the difference from the canister design?
Thanks

Chuck,
Oil bath air filters were an option for some markets such as Africa and maybe Australia because of more dusty conditions. When you open the top, there are three layers of fine wire encased in round trays with mesh. The air is sucked thru the bottom of the bowl which should be filled with engine oil upto the paint mark.
From the outside they look pretty similar except that the inlet on the oil bath is towards the passenger cabin while on the paper element type, the inlet is facing the grill. The oil bath casing is double walled and much heavier.

Hi Naj,
Thanks for the info. My inlet faces the grill. I guess Pittsburgh wasn't considered a high dirt environment. I don't know, Pittsburgh in the 60's?
