Title: thicker oil from cooler
Post by: tuultyme on January 15, 2006, 16:47:57
When I changed my oil this fall I noted that the oil that was drained from the oil cooler was much thicker than that drained from the engine itself.  Could the lines running to the cooler be restricted in some way?  Do the rubber oil lines decay on the inside with age as the rubber brake lines do?  I did warm the engine before doing the oil change.

Hello Bruce,

These oil lines usually stay clear. I have never seen them close down. External deterioration and leakage may eventually occure.

The oil in the coooler would most likely cool and thicken sooner than in the warm engine oil pan  is my guess.

Maybe the cooler was bypassed?  Page 18-3/1 in the BBB describes the filter head, with 2 bypass valves.  One bypasses the oil cooler if there is "major flow resistance (for example during lower outside temperatures)", the other bypasses the filter if there is excess resistance there.
