Title: 230sl 250sl 4-speed gear ratio question
Post by: DaveB on December 20, 2005, 21:55:22
Can anybody tell me if there are any differences in the gear ratios between '65 230sl  and '67 250sl 4-speed transmissions?

230 SL up to production month 10/65:
I 4.42; II 2.28; III 1.53; IV 1.0; R 3.92; Diff 3.75

230 SL as of production month 11/65:
I 4.05; II 2.23; III 1.40; IV 1.0; R 3.58; Diff 3.75

250 SL as of production begin 11/66:
same as late 230 SL as of 11/65, but Diff 3.92; opt. 3.69

These are the standard ratios for German version. Some export versions may have been different, especially in rear axle ratio (diff)

According to my 1969 and 1963 Technical Data books, there is a difference in ratios for the "1st Version" 230SL.  The "1st" Version has generally lower ratios in 1st, 2nd and 3r gears.  I could not find the chassis number break point for the "1st Version".  The later cars used the same rations as the 250SL.

Thanks Klaus, Vince and Arthur.
I have one of each transmission. Based on that gear ratio information I think I might swap out the early one for the later.
