Arthur, so which cars will it fit??  He says it fits 230 and 250 with vertical spare tires, but didn't thespare tire get settled down somewhere mid-run of the 230?  Does it fit cars with flat spare tires?

I don't recall offhand where the tire change, and I don't have my reference info with me, but it was in the early 230's. The 250SL only had the horizontal tire.

I don't think the fuel tank changed when the spare tire position changed.  I think the fuel tank changed when the fuel pump changed.  I have documentation to back this up, it's just what I think I read somewhere.

The tank size changed due to the desire of having a greater distance between fill-ups.  Think it went from a 17.X gallon capacity to a 21.X gallon size.  Ans it just happened that the space the tire vacated under there was the perfect place to expand the tank.

Walter,
So it changed when the spare tire moved?  My 230, 113.042-12-018381 produced Sept. 1966, has the 17.x gallon tank.  Is it incorrect?

Thinking about it, surely this info is in the restoration guide book which I don't have with me while out West, this listing chassis changes by VIN.

Per Merediths list of changes (yes, yes, somewhat suspect I know) but he lists the change to the horizontal mount of the tire at 7205 (23 October 1964), with the exception of numbers 7216, 7232, 7277. He also lists the 82 liter fuel tank as being fitted at 14274 (22 November 65).

Rodd,
The tank did not follow the same time when the spare tire was moved.  Just later on when motor dispacement increases hence the increased thirst.  So a bigger tank was called for.  But I think all the 230SL's and a few of the early 250SL's had the small tank.  I will look at my archives again for the exact change.

I have Gunter Engelen's book, but it's in German so I had a hard time finding these.  His book confirms Meredith's info.  So, I should have a 82 liter tank on my car.  82 liters = 18.04 gallons.  I think I have that because when I fill up after the low fuel warning light activates I typically put in about 16.5 gallons, 17.0 max.

Rodd,
what does your Owner's manual indicate?
My 230SL - #017524 built in June 1966 - according to the original Owner's Manual has a 65 liter tank. Did M-B sell cars with outdated manuals?
The tank on eBay - part number 113 470 0701 - is for a 250/280SL. The part number for a 230SL should be 113 470 0601.

I explained that to him and his answer was he is not sure on the part #.
This is a 65 ltr tank.
250  [ .043] vintage all used the 83 ltr tank.

In the eBay listing it says the part number sticker is still on the fuel tank.  I e-mailed the seller and he said the part number is
113 470 06 01

I see that A Dalton actually got his Q & A posted on the auction itself, with contradicting info.  Why is it so hard to find a good seller on eBay?!?!?!

My part number list agrees with the ones so far stated, 0701 is the larger tank, 0601 the smaller. As far as the manual being incorrect. I would not be surprised. If they printed a bunch of these, they would not be redoing them each time a change was made, although the fuel tank size is something you think should be noted. In any case, during the run of the 230 there were a lot of running changes, all you need to do is scan through the list in Engelen's book, even if you can't read German. It is not surprising that the manual got behind.

Hello all together,

upright to flat spare wheel changed after serial no. 007204 (with a few exception numbers) as already indicated somewhere below. This was around October/November 1964.
There _are_ 2 different fuel tanks for the 230 but both are 60 liters but the earlier one was only up to serial 000202 (if I remember correctly).
230ies had _always_ 65 liter tanks, nothing else (to calm you down, Rodd ;) ).
The 85-liter tank was introduced together with the 250 SL, i.e. all 250/280ies had this larger fuel tank.

Best,
