I don't remeber ever seeing one of these before. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-300-Series-1957-MERCEDES-BENZ-300-SL-GULL-WING_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6330QQitemZ4595066954QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

What I don't get is the 38 bids that have apparently been issued, the price now standing at $225,400, 5 days to go and hardly any explanation what this is all about (i.e. no history, no indication what happened to the car that put it into storage for supposedly 15 years, etc)!

Perhaps Mark Passarelli can shed some light on this mysterious car.

And this from a seller has a 94.7% positive feedback score with most of the cars he sells around $10k!!!

I don't get it really. zunless this was factory, then it looks like someone customized/hotrodized a Gullwing. Doesn't seem like the preferable thing to do. Perhaps this sort of thing seemed reasonable back 'in the day.'

Who is in that picture? I have seen him in several MBZ related photographs. I remember he had an unusual name?
Interesting.

Rudolf Uhlenhaut?

That's Uhlenhaut alright.
I'm assuming this car is some kind of reproduction. There are too many details wrong throughout.
-
It all seems odd !
The nose is not an exact, or even near, reproduction of the "Ulenhaut SLR", in fact its quite ugly !
Why didn't they do it right ?
Also the dash is painted red, when was all this bodywork and silver paintwork carried out ?
As Cees says why do they not state where its been for all those years ?
Shipping to Europe for $995 seem cheap !

Hmm, yes indeed it is a very odd one! Most odd is the mention of the transmission type: Automatic??? Never seen any Gullwing with automatic, except the new reproduction ones. This one is clearly a mishap or somewhat of a scam..

I did see that there were a couple were made for persoanal use . I see where a member who knows these cars is bidding and he would certainly not be fooled on this chassis.
..but he may be silent til the bids are done [ which I can understand]..
Velly Interesting....
-
This is a stock Gullwing; that was modified after an accident.
-
.. and that is the end to the mystery...
-
RanchoMerced,
Can you shed some light on this? No bellypans? Not clear what that would indicate, meaning no floors?
Also the strange three pipes sticking out from under the license plate in the rear. Thought they had one single large pipe?
