The original (diamond pattern) pad in my 280sl is faded and scuffed. Can these things be painted?

I gotta believe that it wouldn't last long. I think vynil paint would crack under the heat of the compartment. Engine paint might not stick as it is pretty brittle when cured. It might be an interesting experiment to paint a lower corner, say under the fuse box, and see what it looks like after a few dozen heat and cool cycles.

Drew:
When we restored my car we were able to remove the (original) firewall pad, recondition it and reinstall. If I'm not mistaken my restorer dyed it black. You could contact Brian at Motoring Investments if you want to know what all he did to it.
See photos of it reinstalled at http://www.motoringinvestments.com/resto280eng.htm
Good luck.

Try hi-temp flat black, who knows it might work?
NOTE: I have NOS original "daimond pattern" pads. I will offer them for sale in the next month or so. Because this site/members have been such assistance to me, they will be offered to this club at a discount (below reserve) before going to ebay. They will not be cheap, however, I need to recover my investment.

I'd have to refer you to Brian Peters for that answer. You'll find his contact information at www.motoringinvestments.com He is a great guy and I'm certain will help you find what you are looking for.
