We just got our 1964 230 SL Euro 4 speed manual back from the restoration shop. I took 5 months, a totally dismantled car, a lot of panel beating and a lot of money. Take a look of the pics, we are very pleased with the result (although there are a few mistakes such as the black paint under the bonnet). It drives like a dream and we can't wait to get it on the road. 8) But what a pitty the winter is approaching
Cheers
Finn

Very Nice , Indeed ..
I did notice that the three cowel hood bumpers have not been installed , so you may want to check on that for paint protection..
possibly they were installed after the picture was taken, in which case , please excuse the casual observation.
-
Congratulations!
One more casual observation: the flat surface behind the grille, where the battery sits, should be painted (flat) black rather than body color.

Thanks for the nice words. Very keen to protect the new paint, so what exactly are the "three cowel hood bumpers" - is the the small rubber things at on left and right corner towards the firewall, which hold the bonnet in place when closed? And where is the third one located?
Thanks
Finn

Beautiful work, you must be thriled. Call me strange, but to me the sexiest shots are of the rough metal work and especially the bare body/chassis.

I agree! Is it my imagination or are a lot of people going for the nut and bolt resto lately? Maybe there's hope for me (and mine)...
By the way -- can anyone tell me about this hole on the right? Mine seem to be little cavaties -- I can poke my finger in.

Idler arm mount

Is it right that from the outer sideview its just a big old hole? It is open in about 5 inches, and also there is a lot of corrosion inside.

...so the bottom line, are the peices available with a square profile anywhere?

It is a pipe that is welded through the frame channel box ... look on the other side and you will see it is the mounting fixture for the idler arm assembly...

Hi, Tom, (Oops!)
Check out Millers (www.millermbz.com), go to the 190SL parts, and look for part number 50-0028. I believe that's what I ordered (can't find the receipt), and it works for me.

A 000 987 5070 is the correct square section rubber. Available by the metre. Thats what I've used.
Or the Miller's item as suggested by David Pease.

I just had my car painted. After reading these posts last night, (I love this site :D ) I discovered I didn't have hood bumpers. So as a quick fix to allow me to drive today, I cut three 50mm sections of vacuum hose and slit them lengthwise down one side. The fit snugly in place and don't move. That'll do until I get replacements.

Finn:
If you are interested in more detail on the flat black paint at battery box and air cleaner see http://www.motoringinvestments.com/RestoLog3.htm for before pictures then go on to the fourth page of that restoration log for some after pictures. Good photos of these conditions.
Good luck.

Naj, do you still have any of this "rubber bumper" left if you bought 1 meter and only used 22 cms as I am struggling to get this from the parts specialists.
I would be prepared to purchase 20 cms off you. I have a UK address and can send you the funds in advance.
Thanks
