Title: Head Gasket
Post by: sammyr on September 30, 2005, 01:34:41
I need the head on my 1969 280sl replaced and a valve job. Howmuch do you think it should cost with the labor?

$1k. The head gasket set is $100 alone. I just did mine. Read my post http://index.php?topic=3946
This cost was for machine shop work only and a new timing chain. I did the removal, install and adjustments. Joe's estimate is much better.

Hello,
Prices for labor and parts will vary widely. Get someone good and experienced to recondition the cylinder head.

You may use a well known re builder like "Metrics" or another local shop for reconditioning  the head with parts.

The factory book time for the removal and replacement is 7.0 hours add 1.7 more for Air conditioning. Of coarse these figures are for factory trained technicians with all the special tools, when the cars were new and in a well equipped work space.

Expect to pay for more hours.

You may opt for more new parts than actually needed. Some things like valves may be within specs, but some owner's may opt for all new. The same with many other parts. The timing chain and water pump are worthwhile replacing if they have a lot of miles on them. etc.

Your finish cost will be a result of your preliminary research, the cost of labor in the shop you choose and the cost of parts and head reconditioning. My guess would be from $1000 to $2500. You could go higher if you need a camshaft and rockers etc, etc.
