I've recently aquired an 230SL from my father that was apart for the last 15 years. I am missing the original 2 vin tags. I tried through a local Mercedes Dealer to see if the factory can reissue a vin tag and the dealer has continually said no. I know the names of the original and second owner. My father being the third owner.
Has anyone gone down this road before?

I know that in the past MBNA provided these tags (took some time because they ordered them from Germany). Try MBUSA Classic, 1-866-MBClassic

I wanted to spruce up my engine bay and thought about a new one for that cause the old one is awful looking. Paul Henle MC Classis will likely tell you that they will not provide these anymore. Apparently there were some problems developing from this practice in the past...

Thank you for your insight. I plan on contacting Mercedes Classic and will follow with their response.

The VIN tag offered on ebay is of course not a tag applicable to 1960 to 1975 - our W113 tags look different. As a matter of fact, the WDB prefix was only introduced when US regulations (NHTSA) mandated the 17 digit VIN in the late 70s (it stands for [W]est Germany [D]aimler enz)

Right you are, Klaus, I should have noticed the WDB. So this plate is more likely an 80's vintage?
