Title: Becker Europa Wiring
Post by: jmbour on September 21, 2005, 13:03:19
I would need some help to install a Becker Europa Mono on my 1971 280 SL.
I have found a lot of comments on Becker Europas on this forum, but not clear answer to my question, as it seems that there have been several models of Europas, including some with a pre amp.

I think I have found which cable is the ground, which goes to the speaker, and where to plug the antenna, but I would like to be sure that the black wire on the right with a blue plug is the power.
Please, see the attached pic.

Thanks

I think you are correct.  The Becker Installation Instructions list the following descriptions/drawing for the items you have labled

1 - Antenna Jack
2 - (Instructions do not list ground)
3 - Shows a drawing of a single speaker with dotted lines to a second speaker.  I think the drawing indicates the radio is mono.
4 - Connection for automatic antenna and shortwave adapter
5 - (Instructions do not list power)

I'm certain 2 is the chassis ground and 5 is power as you indicate.  The connector next to the antenna connector is listed as "Pick up".  This is the connector enables audio from the shortwave radio or other device such as an IPOD to play through the radio.  You need a specific cable made by Becker for this operation.

I hope this helps.

Hello JMB,

Your labels are all correct. The rubber mounting peg on the side can be removed (used on the W114 sedans)no use on the W113 cars.

Thanks to all !

Joe is right : the rubber mounting peg fits my W114 280CE.

Do I need brackets to install the radion on the 280SL ?

I realize that this thread has been dead for years, but I'm wondering if someone can tell me if I can put my Becker Europa in an early 250 SL without cutting metal.  Also wondering how to change the light bulb.  Any hints?   The back of my radio looks like the picture in the earlier post.  Thanks.

For my 66 230sl I made a new pannel out of sheet steel with the larger DIN size hole. So if i ever decide to switch back to a period correct radio (that works) I can just install it with the unaltered original pannel.

The light is below the black pannel behind the indicator needle, it rests on two pins and is held in place by a small tension spring, remove the spring and the black pannel will slide out from behind the needle. The bulb should be a push in type, A Europa II stereo will have two bulbs one for the pannel light and the other for the stereo indicator.

I really wish the previous owner of my SL had done that. Instead, I stared with dismay at the sight of the non-right-angled expansion they did to that slot...
