No you don't. I was thinking "YOU DON'T SEE THIS ... EVERYDAY" just this morning as I was driving in to work ... behind a distinguished old gent in his 300 sl Gullwing (in Wash.dc.; red; burning a bit of oil, frankly)

I'll bet that was Knight Kiplinger. Go to the link and scroll down and you'll see him posing next to his car:

...notice on the Landon School website, that even at this Concours, the Gull Wing gets best of show! ;)
As for the original ski rack offered by our friend Tom Collitt, notice he lives in L.A...of course he has it for sale, isn't a ski rack in L.A. somewhat like a long-board rack for a station wagon in Manitoba? 8)

Mike -- I see your reasoning but I sort of disagree. In LA (because it IS LA), people love to show off ski racks and such. It shows that they are cool and are ready at a moments notice to head to Mammoth Mtn, Big Bear or Tahoe. Trust me, its true. Now, having a ski rack on a Pagoda would probably not be common -- because it would disappear in an LA minute!

Sorry Mike -- consider me taking it one step further! To be honest, I don't know if surf racks are common in Manitoba. I see them around here once in a while -- and last time I looked there is no ocean down the street! [:p]

I have a "European Delivery" optional equipment sheet from 1969 suggesting that the price of a ski rack for the 280 SL was $32.00!
BTW, front and rear bumper guards were a $15 option (for all 4), automatic antenna was $49 and Limited Slip Differential was $38. "All around" tinted, heat insulating glass was $28. Interesting.

Jim--to paraphrase you:
In Grass Valley, people love to show off their [surf]board racks. It shows they are cool, and are ready at a moment's notice to head to Malibu, Manhattan Beach, or Oceanside...trust me, its true. ;)
Seriously, though with all the classic, er, "collector" cars around here--we have as many or more then southern California, it is not too uncommon to see an old "Woody" with a rack and a longboard JUST for effect at a car show. In fact I think they are bolted down and not removable! I heard it said once that there are 50,000 surfers in the USA and 500,000 that dress like them. Don't know if they included cars in the "dress like them" number... :D

I hear ya, Mike. On a related note, this is the annual weekend that Grass Valley hosts a fairly large American Classic car show. Everywhere you turn, there is a cherry BelAir or a GTO or something cruising around town. I plan to go to the show a bit later. While its American only -- and I have to park outside the gathering -- I always get a few curious onlookers.
