Hello,
I am in restoration of 1970 auto 280sl.
The tranny does not want to go into "park"
The linkage is not connected and I am moving the lever as far forward as possible. It stays in reverse.
If I move the selector back a few clicks it does go into forward.
What is possible cause for not allowing me to engage "park" - Linkage is not issue, I am moving selector below.
thank you

As I remember, the park position at the transmission lever is in the back position. What happens if you disconnect the linkage to the shift lever and move the lever of the transmission in the rear position? Then it should block the drive shaft.

The portion I am moving to the front is the lever on the transmission. This lever is in the most forward position.
The actual shift lever was in the most rear position before I disconnected it to manually move transmission linkage.
The transmission worked correctly before complete restoration so it was a properly functioning tranny.
I just rebuilt the shifter inner bushings and realized it was out of adjustment.

Did you remove the shifter shaft which goes into the transmission? I had a problem similar here to fix. The inner parts were not assembled correctly by another "specialist" and the nut was not tightened. The securing steel sheet was not bended into the groove.
The second photo shows the correct position in "park".

Hello,
the transmission was not taken apart as it worked nicely before restoration was started.
Thank you for any suggestions.

The transmission worked correctly before complete restoration so it was a properly functioning tranny.
I took this as the whole transmission was restored. Maybe others did too.
