I have a chance to buy 4 speed gear box from a early 280 sl 1967 is this the same gear box as my 1965 230 sl I understand that there is a difference with the later 280 sl trying to make sure

There's different gearing, with the earliest 230SL transmissions being a little bit lower. I can't recall any other differences, though I'm sure others will know.

Thank you Jack do you know any sources that could verify that the gear boxes are the same one source told 280 was different but tthis is a early 280 1967

Hi, Seamus,
I know nothing about transmissions, but I'm sure I've read somewhere on the forum that the flywheels for the earlier and later transmissions are not interchangeable. That would make me suspect that there could be a difference somewhere. Have you checked part numbers for the two models to see if they're the same (or if the 230SL part number is replaced by the 280SL part number)?
Just my thoughts,
