Title: Emergency Brake Not Working

The emergency brake on our 1971 280SL is not locking into a "brake on" position.  Pulling up on the handle applies the brake, but it won't stay.  In other words, the brake is working, but it will not stay locked in place.  Depressing the button does nothing.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be the problem?
