Title: Oh dear
Post by: JamesL on August 11, 2005, 04:34:11
This is the woman I married....

I was having a quick ebay browse this morning and saw a tidy looking 250 for sale in the UK

We've had a hankering for a 250, partly due to the small run and partly due to 67 being her birth year

So I call her and tell her about the car.... "buy it" she says.

Then I tell her it was first registered on her birthDAY. "ooh, we have to buy it" she says.

(note a certain lack of regard for the quality of the car, that we have 3 cars and no space already and that we cannot afford it...)

Fortunately for me I had a get out clause.

I battled long and hard with her to take her driving test in a manual car. She refused and so is legally only allowed to drive an auto. This car is a manual

"I can learn" she wimpered.... 8)

As a hypothetical question, if a decent car came up for sale with that kind of special date, what would you do? After all, all the advice is buy the best you can afford...

tempting from a romance standpoint but....

Only you would know the significance of the date.  If you are happy with that little secret, so be it.  However, as they say, buy the best you can afford!

In my case, I would have to buy the car or face the 'dog house' for the rest of my days. Unless of course the car fails the viewing/driving test.

Buy it, unless as Naj said it fails the look/drive test.  If the birthday connection makes the car special to you and her, then it's special and that's that.  Then spend many romantic evenings teaching her to shift, then to a performance driving school.  She'll be hooked.

I tried to get my wife behine the wheel of a Mustang GT but she refused and siad we needed a four door car. Then my client with his 1992 300-E sportline all black and shinny shows up with a for sale sign I call her and said it drives like the ford Mustang a little taunt  cause its a sport model , but it is automatic. My lost she took the bait and bought the car.
Now I have to take care of another Mercedes-Benz. It is not that I dislike the car  and it does ride and handle really nice,But aside that its black there are a trillion of these in Los Angeles and I was hoping on getting her to buy a more collectable car for us to have fun with.

Tosh, with all said if you don't get her this car you'll wind up paying one way or another.  I don't know about you but if my wife is happy I'm HAPPY!

Good luck!

Go for it. I once bought a used Mercedes 300D in Florida when I was living there in 1990 that, as it turned out from the title, had been imported on the very day that I first entered the US to come live there: August 15, 1982. That made the car that much more special to me.

Bob, there are a trillion of EVERYTHING in Los Angeles, and they are ALL on the FREEWAYS at all times!  It's kind of hard to stand out there, automotively speaking...

Thanks Naj

Good to meet you yesterday. The wife was very jealous when I told her you had 2 pagodas. She then asked "how come?" (My reply was "he must be very rich or a sucker for punishment") :D

buy it.
but don't let her test drive it.
my wife got behind the wheel of a manual trans 230sl (a car she did not want) during the pre-purchase test drive, put into 1st gear and promptly drove it into a brick wall.

we bought it (for more than it was worth).
On the drive home she had tears in her eyes but I had a big goofy grin.
