Title: Tall or long fuel pump question
Post by: Wray on April 23, 2025, 19:04:38
The 1969 280SL has a tall fuel pump. After removing the sending unit, a new tank was installed. The tank screen is now clean and a new fuel filter installed. Is there a screen in the fuel pump at the inlet? I can’t find one on this site or the manual I have. The old tank was nasty and I’m guessing some gunk got past the tank screen. The car will now idle but at 2,000 rpm will eventually start to miss and run poorly? Thanks.

Yes there should be, you will need a strong 1/2" impact gun to buzz it off. If I recall correctly it is 27mm.

Thanks, sounds like it’s best to remove the pump and get it on the bench to get that connection out?

I always do it in the car, but that is also on a lift where I can stand up. There is not much extra clearance between the tank and pump so you will need the right combination of tools. Also make sure to pinch off the rubber hose really good coming out of the tank or your fuel will dump out.

Gentlemen,  many thanks, removed and cleaned the fuel pump filter and  10 mile test drive was positive, need to out some miles on it now. Impact wrench was an excellent idea.
