Title: Key issues.

I’ve had issues with the plastic portion of my key head splitting and literally falling apart when I’ve opened a door or the trunk.  These have not been necessarily been just old pieces.  I purchased some new ones from the classic center that did the same. 

I ran across a company called Blenddoor.com that produces a two part head made of anodized aluminum.  The two pieces sandwich the key and are held together with small Allen head screws.  Once assembled it is essentially unbreakable.  These sell for $29.95 + SH.

Key heads from Mercedes falling apart are very annoying. There is a replacement blank with good and solid head, but your solution offers keeping the original key.

the mercedes keys have a soft head, which has advantages in the event of accidents by reducing the risk of injury.
If you use a key head made of aluminum, you forgo the advantages.
