Title: Paint Related Question
Post by: Mike on August 09, 2005, 16:40:13
I am in the middle of a repaint and I am wondering whether the textured rock guard stuff that is on the rocker panels is also supposed to be on the flat part of the fender lips.  Mine had it there but I assumed that it was put on during one of the several cheesy repaints that my car had.

I now wish I had thought to check this on the many cars at Joe Alexander's Ohio event but I did not focus on it until now.  By the way, I agree with all the statements made about the Ohio event.  It was a great event and I really enjoyed it a lot.  We have a great group of people in this club.

Not sure exactly what you mean by the "flat part of the fender lips" The piece that just curls in from the outer fender, about less than an inch wide? Or a part of the rocker panel cover? I guess it is hard to describe, as I really can't even ask for clarification clearly!

Mike I wondered the same thing because a repaint is in my futre.
I looked at some of the original unrestored, unmolested cars both at Joe's and abroad. What I think that seems to be a factory Meredes treatment. The chipgaurd was sprayed on rocker and the small "lip" you speak of. My car also has that. I used to think that was incorrect. Now think that it is correct. Don't let your bodyman mud the headlight bezel mount notches. But I am sure you knew that.
It was nice meeting you at Joe's and good luck with your repaint.

Mercedes and future are also correct.
Not as previously posted by my laptop on my belly.

Thanks Guys.  I think you are correct Ernie.  Johnny, what we're talking about is the part of the edge of the fender that encircles the wheel wells.  It's about one inch in width, flat and faces down.

I think the lip that goes around the fender should be body color and body paint. I am traveling this week, and can't go out and check mine.Inside the wheel well should be the crinkled finish, body schutz, I believe.

The body schutz should be along the lip, in a rather random manner (i.e. it is not a perfect line).  Mine is original and has it.  It is a pain to get wax and dirt out of it prior to a concours.
