Title: 1969 300SEL 3.5 M116 Motor and Transmission Any Interest?
Post by: waltklatt on February 21, 2025, 00:44:48
A brother in law gave me the motor stated above to sell.
It's been in storage for 40 years, it's not locked up, but something is stopping it from turning a full revolution.  Goes 180 in one direction and stops, turns back to original position.  Looks to be a low mileage as the original clamps are still present.
No distributor, fan belt accessory items or fan.  Has the air suspension compressor.
No spark plug wires, but everything else is there.
Includes the automatic transmission, still bolted together.

Had to rent a truck to haul from upstate NY to bring home in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Would asking $1700.- be too much?

Make me an offer, and I will be happy to assist with loading on your pickup truck or trailer.  Sorry, I don't have an engine hoist.
Have pictures for those who are interested.

Hey Walter,

As a buyer, I've always valued engines based on these things:

Does it turn over/run/condition

Scarcity/parts availability/

How much work it would take to make this engine workout in my favor

Very common engines that aren't turning over or blown, I price them at scrap prices. Obviously, rare  or exotic engines are worth more.

How hard would it be for me to find parts, a replacement engine, or difficulty to fix.

Is buying this engine worth the effort required to meet my goals?

As for the price of your engine, I'm unsure what 3.5's go for. 4.5 are more common and sell for near nothing these days.

Thank you Pirublues,
I am aware that this motor is not complete and not locked up.
Just needs a disassembly to check the innards and figure out what is blocking the motor from doing a complete revolution.
The listing states its missing a few items to make a complete motor.
Thought this would be a nice project for someone who needs an early 3.5 M116 motor.
So it's open for offers.
Would like to pass this to someone, instead of scrapping it.

Best to all,
Walter
