Hello everyone
You may recall the problem I was having with a strong rotten egg gas smell from my 230 SL. It was not related to the fuel at all. It turned out to be a bad battery. I only realised this when the battery failed last weekend and I had to jump start the car to get going. When I stopped for petrol an hour later, the smell was so strong that people 50 metres away were complaining! I pulled the bonnet (hood) and the battery was very hot to touch, hissing and bubbling. A new battery has fixed the problem. One of motoring's more esoteric experiences!
Mark
p.s. it was a genuine Mercedes-Benz battery by the way).

Hey MarkR,
I don't want to dampen your spirits and hopefully you have solved the problem BUT I wonder if the regulator is working properly?
Maybe you should regularly check your new battery for a while to see if it boils away too.

Hi Bob
Yes, that thought occurred to me too. I had the charging system checked when I changed the battery but I'll keep an eye on it.
