Title: Becker Europa with extra box? Stereo????
Post by: Chad on July 31, 2005, 23:39:57
I'm scratching my head a bit on this. I have what was given to me as the "original" radio for the 67 230SL. Want to replace the aftermarket Blaupunkt with this radio as the Becker is simply in perfect condition on the knobs and faceplate and it seems appropriate.  Don't know if this radio even works!

Reading the threads here, and in particular Joe Alexander's comments on the Becker Europas...  well, my radio has an extra box seemingly connected t the speaker cable. It is metal about 1.5" x 2" x 5".  There are two outlets on it that are each two pronged.  One says "links" and the other "rechts."  Is this sometype of stereo speaker signal device??? BTW, my car seems to have only the center dash speaker, as far as I can tell there is no kickpanel speaker holes.

I am a bit puzzled and wonder if this setup is the right one for a mono single speaker car?

I can supply photos of it once I find my camera tomorrow.

I think it must be an external amplifier, but not sure.  In any case, if I have only the center speaker, is there any particular way of connecting it??

What sort of Becker Europa is it? There were early mono Europa model and later mono Europa model with AM and FM. The later Europa Stereo 2 had small inbuilt amps of about 5 watts.

If the box is like that shown on the eBay site then it is connected by a DIN connector to the radio. It is probably the power amp of the time.

'links = left'
'recht = right'

Check the dash opening size too because the early cars had a smaller dash opening than the modern standard DIN radio size.

The prior posts have it right, you have an amp (with a whopping 3W Mono output!) that attached to the radio via din connector.  Here is a pic of mine in a '64 230sl, it is secured to the firewall above passenger feet with a single wing bolt (good luck threading the darn thing, it is blind)

Good luck,

g

I found a sticker on it that was almost hidden that says Europa 2 MU. This amp doesn't look like the one in the ebay picture.  I am trying to figure out how to mouth the amp in there at first, and then relaized that I couldn't make sense of how it connected with the mono radio. I think maybe this radio (although the faceplate is beautiful and it seems very nice) does not belong with my car originally.

I think you might be right - the radio and amp may not be original for '67. Europa 2 MU I believe denotes a stereo AM/FM radio. I don't think there were any stereo radio options available until the 280 sl (others will know for sure). If you could post pictures we could probably id the vintage of the radio - seems 230sl Beckers had smaller dial knobs and different shaped press-buttons than the later versions.

Chad,
The dash opening for the later 250sl and 280sl is bigger than that of the 230sl and early 250sl.

The Becker radios also were made different sizes to fit.

The radio is a Europa with M and U buttons and may have FM but NO stereo.

I think the BOX is a stereo amp.

Hello Chad,
It sounds like you have the early Becker Stereo Radio. The early stereo units had separate amp box with jacks for the two stereo speakers. Later Becker Stereos did not require a separate amp box when electronic pars became smaller. To fit this radio in the smaller 230SL oppening a front radio mount and faceplate assembly are required as used on the original TR versions.
This can be done easily and becker will provide the correct parts including the early knobs to match your car if needed.
I have done some posts with pictures, you may want to "search" them up. I am pressed for time at the moment and will try to help again later.

Becker of NA has published a nice Becker Vintage Radio Pamphlet which we distributed at the Tech Session, I have some left if you would like one. They show the different vintage knobs faceplates etc. which they still supply for our old Becker Radios. Ed Ebel at Becker is very helpful also. Always tell him your one of our group. He has been very supportive.

Yes Becker Stereo Radios were offered in the latest W113 cars. I have the Becker layout showing the dual speakers, and location if needed.

Back to you ASAP,
