Title: 1965 230SL Wheel caps
Post by: Shamster on August 19, 2024, 13:54:02
hello - new member here.

I have a 1965 230SL in red and love it. However I am looking for the correct smaller wheel hub caps in black (because I have a contrast black roof) Does anyone have a set? Mine currently has 1967 250/280 red hubcaps which I'm happy to part with when I get the original replacements sorted.

Shami

It usually difficult to find a specific color.  If yours are in good shape, why not just get them painted black?

Or do them yourself. It is a bit tedious to mask them, but gets nice results. Or you can try to see if the SL group's stencil has been located.

If the hubcaps are in good shape, you can easily strip off the old paint.

I understand you have later type full rim hub caps and you are looking for dog bowl type, right?

In any case: if you are to remove paint from any hub caps, use chemical paint remover, I would not try to remove paint mechanically.

Hello, if Pawel is correct and you don't currently have the smaller caps, there are always plenty on ebay, you'll be very lucky to get the colour you want, so will end up having the paint them

Some in the UK at the moment

There's a set in black in Germany, but these will need painting anyway, they look very tatty, and could be dented, plus postage may be excessive.  Better to find the best condition set you can and don't worry about the colour

For the 230sl you will also need the beauty rings that go around the lip of the wheels too. They are quite hard to find in good shape and condition but aftermarket in stainless steel are not too bad either.

Also check if you have the correct wheels for the dog dish bowls as there will be 3 protruding lips just above the wheel bolts where the dog dish caps fit on.

Hi, Shami,

I have a couple of sets of (painted) hub caps (as opposed to the full wheel covers that I believe you have now), and also some beauty rings that I plan to sell (all used).  However, the shipping from California might be prohibitive.  You can PM me if you're interested and would like photos, etc.
