Title: Selling 230SL 65 liter fuel tank
Post by: rwmastel on August 14, 2024, 18:44:21
$200 or best offer, plus shipping.

Probably the factory original fuel tank from my Oct 1966 build 230SL.  Was rusty inside when I bought the car in 2000.  I cleaned it out and used it without problems until my engine had a valve problem in 2009.  I just bought a new fuel tank as part of my refurbishment.  I can ship it in the box that my new one came in.  Perhaps the buyer can de-rust and seal the tank.  It is not leaking.

Is the tank still available?

Yes, and I've cleaned it up since taking those videos.  Definitely factory original, has some of the yellow assembly line inspection paint on it.  Would you like an updated video?

I doubt it.  $200 price is an 83% discount compared to my new tank from the Classic Center.  Shipping to me was about $150.  I'll box and take it to UPS store for a shipping estimate.  Send me a PM with your address.

The UPS Store (or a PostNet, MailBox Etc. or Fedex Office) will always charge a premium on shipping. If you saved the original box that your new one came in you'll save a LOT of expense. Your club uses www.pirateship.com to save money on shipping...and we ship a lot of stuff!

With all due respect, that is a lot for an old tank that needs to be refurbished.

Dirk,
It's my understanding that the Dansk tanks don't have the "flower pot" inside, like the MB tanks do.  I wonder how they perform in low fuel situations.

Michael,
I have the box.  I'll check out your recommendation.

Ydoka44,
I just removed my exhaust.  The second muffler has holes.  I'll have to really inspect the rest to see if it might be worth using as "better than nothing".  Are you trying to revive a basket case with used parts?  You might want to start using the Wanted forum to ask for specific parts.  A lot of people here have a lot of available parts.  Also, welcome to the Group!  I see you just joined last week.

Ydoka44,

Sorry for the delay, I didn't do any car related activities this weekend.  I was busy on a shed extension!  I'll get a shipping price this week and then we can negotiate.

Did you figure out how to send a private message in our system?

Ydoka44,

I see you're a full member.   Scroll down on this page and you'll see a photo of the inside of a fuel tank.  This is the "flower pot" system that the Dansk aftermarket tanks don't have.

Rodd,
I usually don’t comment on pricing but since yudoka44 appears to be a fairly new member, I just wanted to make sure he is aware of other options out there.
With respect to the dansk tank. I know two pagodas that run them successfully. How much the flower pot really does or if it is just an over-engineered Mercedes feature, I don’t know.
But, if you can buy a new tank for around 370 including shipping from Autohaus, i personally would not bother with refurbishing a tank that may or may not be usable and costs 200 pl ship.
I did refurbish mine (free) and it was a pain , mainly because of the flower pot as well as clogged vent lines.
Why did you not keep the “original “ ?

Hi.  Because I'm going to have the mechanical injection pump rebuilt, so I wanted new fuel system parts.  I'll be replacing injectors if mine test bad, replacing fuel hoses, lines.  You get the idea.
