Wonder if someone can help decipher the manufacturer codes etched on Pagoda glass.
These 2 photos are both taken of 280SL’s with factory Green tint.
The codes are very similar but one has “DOT27” whereas the other doesn’t.
The one with DOT27 is on an Australian Delivered Car and other is UK delivered. ( not sure if that is relevant)
I’m curious to know what all this means - hope someone knows ☺️

How Do You Read a Windshield Code?
First of all, it’s important to note that there is no standardised pattern of displaying the entire windscreen glass code. So, you’ll notice some differences in the windshield monogram of two different cars.
Still, the following pieces of info imbedded in the code are almost universally used and presented among auto glass manufacturers. Here’s how you read them:
Car Manufacturer: Right at the top, you should see the car manufacturer’s logo and name. Bear in mind that this is the logo for the car that the windshield is attached to, not necessarily the glass itself.
Glass Manufacturer: Besides the car manufacturer, the code will also display the glass manufacturer’s name and logo. This is the company that supplies the windshield to the carmaker to use in the assembly process.
Glass Brand Name: Windshield manufacturers may have unique brand names for that particular range of windshields. If they do, they’ll usually print the brand name as well.
AS number: This stands for “American Standard”. The number that comes after “AS” will indicate the exact level of quality by American standards.
M Number: Besides a glass brand name, the code should also include the M number or model number. That number is not universal, as each glass manufacturer might have its own M number.
DOT Code: Even on some cars in Australia, you'll find American codes like these on the windshield. The DOT code is the Department of Transportation code, a requirement for windscreens used in the US.
E Code: The E code indicates in which country the windscreen was certified as assigned by the United Nations Economic Commission of Europe. If it was certified in Australia, the code would be E45.
Production Date: Some windshield codes will include the production date, i.e. the month and year when the glass was manufactured.

Rob, you prompted me to go have a look at my own. The first pic is from the windshield when I purchased the car in 2009. I don't know if it's original. The car was originally German delivery, imported into the US in 1968. The second pic is what I have now. I replaced the windshield in 2012 and this is the one I got from the MB Classic Center in Irvine, CA.

I had my windscreen seal replaced some 12 years ago, the glass company that did the replacement of seal asked me if I wanted to also replace the windscreen, I said no, want to keep original, even if the laminate is showing some separation. However they did need to place an order for new replacement windscreen to be put on hold, in case when they take the original windscreen out they broke it. This was a condition of them replacing the seal( and by the way, the seal was a OEM). Attached are my glass codes both windscreen and side glass. As you can see, all three are a little different. I do know that during the buildout on the assembly line MB would use parts that were available at the line at the time. I will assume that was reason for different codes. Do know car was in accident during it’s fifth year, and maybe this could be reason. Accident cars would go back to factory for repairs back then. There were no private repair shops. The entire history of the car came with the car, time it spent in Germany up to time of import to US and to me.

I had to replace mine because it was so badly pitted that I could literally not see through it anymore when the sun hit it at a specific angle. Scared the crap out of me the first time it happened.

Dave, if you look at my first picture you will see there is no MB star. I did a search on Kinonglas-Kristail and it appears they supplied glass for the 300SL and 190SL but I don't know if they had the MB star on their glass.

There are a few more pictures on here, with and without the MB star, including mine, but i can't confirm if mine was ever replaced before my ownership
