Title: Early SL Center Tray?
Post by: BdogSL on May 03, 2024, 16:54:33
Someone passed this on to me a few years/decades ago.  Center tray for a Pagoda, but with a round ashtray orifice?  Was there ever such a thing? Trying to post a picture.

Not knowing the historical facts, it seems to me someone just swapped ashtray for a cup holder maybe.

The wood matches quite well for a modification, like you I'm puzzled.

Is it in the front? Does the tray have the usual holes for fixing?

Also: if I recall correctly, my tray has a little cut out in the front edge to hold the ashtray. This one does not. Maybe it is all made by someone?

Let's see what others say.

I vaguely remembered there was a change in the center tray.

In the tech manual you have access to the Pagoda Notes that list the changes through the years.

In Pagoda Notes Volume 9 No.3 - The center box was changed with 230 SL VIN ending in 771. The ashtray was added. So an early box, would be just that, a rectangular box. Fitting the cut out with the circle would probably have been an easy modification. They did not come from the factory that way.

Does look like nice work, and probably quite useable.
