Title: Steering Column / Wheel
Post by: Derm Cain on April 22, 2024, 15:44:20
I disassembled and reassembled the steering column in my 1965 230SL.  When I went to install the steering the shaft seemed short or the wheel could not go on enough to install the retaining nut.  Thinking something inside not in place. Any suggestions?

As I recall, there’s two couplers on the steering shaft – one down at the steering box and another inside the steering column. Sounds like you need to loosen one or both of these couplers and raise the steering shaft a bit to enable installation of the steering wheel. I’m not near my car right now, but seems like there’s an access hole in the steering column to enable you to get an Allen wrench in there to loosen the coupler.

I suspect its your center bearing location. Take a look at the drawing and the internal bearing clamp.
