Were rubber floor mats ever a factory option? These are the mats that came out of the car. There was not Carpet in the footwells. I a guessing the trunk is factory and if so the other 2 seem very similar. I know the 2 at the top with x's that were on top of the others are obviously not factory (They say RubberMaid on the back HA)
Just curious if there is any reason to try and clean these up or if they were just after market and I should find new ones...
Thanks for any info...

I believe the 230 (and 250?) variant(s) came with rubber mats in the driver and passenger footwells. Everything else was done in square weave carpets. I think black mats are actually still available from some vendors.
Here’s what one from Authentic.

230sl's, from what I understand, only had rubber mats, though many put carpets in the wells in error. They also had the hold down screws as shown

Yes, the rubber mats were all that was installed, and those look factory original. Available colors are limited these days.

BTW, they were grey in color

Ouch! Why would Gahh sell them to me as part of the kit! I am sure they were half the cost of my carpet kit.

I would agree that they should give you the option as people make all kinds of different choices. But, a full interior would include the rubber floor mats because otherwise your feet would be on sheet metal. On the 230SL, that's all the factory ever included were the rubber mats.

Save the trunk mat if original nail worth lots of money, unlettered MB is not starting to restock them, they are a scarce item.

Yea I am going to keep all the original ones and see if I can bring them back to life. Or the life a 60 year old...

I just save a PDF version of the factory manual pages I need, rename them clearly, and keep them in a folder so I can pull them up quickly on my phone or laptop.

I replaced the carpets in my 230SL with the original mats (new), which Gernold assisted me with. There is a very helpful template in the Technical Manual about where they need to be cut. Be careful as you move the original ones about -- they tear very easily (I almost learned this the hard way with my original trunk mat!).
Does anyone know what went under them? I assume that there was something between the rubber mats the floor below as some form of padding or insulation. I'd be grateful if an original of a 230/early 250 with rubber mats would photograph what's under the mat.
