I have 1967 230SL and I am considering replacing the backlights with LED bulbs to get more intense light. Would this replacement add more load on the wiring system and the fuse box? Is there any precautions I should take before this replacement?

"Backlights"
You mean the back lighting of the instrument cluster? Or, the backing (reversing) lights in the taillight assembly?
Well, either way, LEDs use less power so they should be putting less load on the system.
Quite a lot of discussions have occurred on LED lighting, so there is a lot you can learn using our search feature.

I intend to replace the B9 small bulbs for the backlight only. The reason is that the original bulb does not give out intense light which is hard to see by traffic behind us. Thanks for your contribution.

OK, so backlight = taillight. Do you call your headlight a frontlight?
Did you try the Search feature? Here's just one sample discussion I found. There are many more, plus details in the Tech Manual for Full Members.

Every single bulb I changed to LED, dash instruments, heat vent control etc...

I’ve done it and its not causing any problem.

I think the dash charging light needs to be an old school non LED so that it ignites the charging system. Could be wrong but not sure an LED will do that.

I agree with Paul advice, I replaced some months ago that light with a LED with a resistance soldered and an autoelectrician took it away and put an old bulb.
The dash charging light is correct now....!

I tried a search first but couldn't find anything - My question: has anyone ever tried replacing European SL headlight bulb with an LED?

I can't wait when the LED retrofitted headlight bulbs are legal in the EU. It is just now some types for some cars.
Sead, you are closer to this - if you hear any good news on this topic, please shout.
