Title: Terminology in Tech manual for rear lights

Having a wee problem ‘translating’ what is meant by ‘parking/clearance’ light? Please see attached photo

I am presuming this is the light you leave on if parking on a dark street so no one runs into you?!?!? Why the ‘clearance’ word though? Making sure people keep clear?

Secondly. So my rear light cluster as two bulbs, one behind the other, for use as rear lights and seemingly the trunk/boot. The other seems to be labelled as the parking/clearance/trunk.

The question is, should the bulb ‘facing’ the boot, also come on when the rear lights are on? Or do these purely come on when lights set to ‘parking’?

Clearance lights seem to be used on large trucks and trailers, to warn other drivers of the extremities of the vehicle, i can't see the term used in relation to cars, not in the UK at least

From what i understand the bulb nearest the clear panel in the bulb holder is the "clearance" lamp, what we in the UK would term the parking light, switched on when the light switch is turned anti-colockwise. This would also illuminate the boot/trunk

The other small bulb in front of this is the normal rear light, illuminates when the switch is turned clockwise, either position 1, driving lights (sidelights) or position2, dipped lights. This would also illuminate the boot/trunk

I think that's correct, i haven't actually ever bothered to check on my car

This term was recently introduced / explained to me at a car show when a few of us saw an old Rolls Royce park, and its headlights were pointing down. I'm used to "low beams" and "high beams". Maybe we should create a terminology cross reference thread? :-\

Only just found out that I had ‘parking/clearance’ lights?!?!. 😱

It’s only because I couldn’t work out why the bulbs didn’t come on, did I decide to look at the manual 🤣
