Title: New Orleans: Spare W113 Parts
Post by: AdelaidePagoda on May 10, 2023, 06:53:19
Are there any New Orleans residents or anyone who knows this city well online who can recommend a new/ used part store there.
I will be travelling there next week and whilst I am there hoping I can pick up some spare original parts for an 1964 230SL including an alternator.
Drop me a note if you know of anywhere or anyone that may be able to help. I am always happy to meet new Pagoda owners!
Thank you, Dave

Full members have access to a list of members who have volunteered to help travelers.  Help with finding local mechanics, finding parts, giving advice, giving mechanical help, sharing meals/drinks (social), etc..

Dave,

Nearly any "foreign auto parts store" can help you with a rebuilt Bosch alternator...but best to do some checking in advance. Your best bet may be on the internet, ship to your hotel, and ship the core back...which means back the old one and bring it with you!

There's a huge number of trusted suppliers (many in the USA) and the same applies: ship to your hotel and just ensure what you want is in stock so you don't end up with backorder deliveries after you return home.

Thanks rwmastel and mdsalemi, great advice and duly noted. Shipping to the hotel is a good idea. I still need to check that the airlines will allow an alternator in my checked international luggage 😂 anyone done this before?

Authentic Classics and Bud's Benz are both reliable US-based parts suppliers and have (in my experience) taken a very personal interest in making sure that their customers are happy. I bought my 230SL alternator from Bud's and am very happy with it. I'm sure if you explain to them what you need, they'll be happy to help. But, based on my own personal experience in similar situations, I'd make sure that the hotel knows to expect a package for you before you arrive.

With respect to alternators, I would check Pelican parts or RMeuropean first as they are likely less expensive. Their shipping is fast, usually within a couple of days where as Buds is easily a couple of weeks, if that matters.

To close the loop on this one, I had the good fortune of meeting Stephan at Gullwing on the Gold Coast Australia last week. Given his extensive experience with all things classic Mercedes, he was able to find a suitable refurbished 35 amp 14 V 1964 Bosch Alternator.
I have since had it fitted and it works perfectly!
Many thanks Stephan, you are a gentleman and I will be sure to recommend and utilise your services in the  future.
