Title: Hood/bonnet badge
Post by: Brennie on April 12, 2023, 08:03:23
Hi
I’m trying to find a reasonably priced bonnet badge.. this one keeps popping up when I search.. is it the correct one or, does it HAVE to have W113 stamped on the back?
Thank you

Hi Brennie,
Looks correct to me and I don’t think they had a 113 nr on the back. Show us the other side as well please and check the size and distance from the attachment welded bolt to the pip on the back matches the holes in your bonnet.
Regards
Chris

It’s difficult to tell.. I know originally they were enamelled .. newer ones (R107 look similar)were painted…

190SL and 300SL were exactly the same except the long threaded stud was on the top position instead of the lower position like the W113. The one in the picture looks to be correct for a pagoda.

It’s impossible for me to take a photo showing it, but mine definitely HAS 113 stamped on the back of it.

You made me look. I replaced the hood badge on my car some years back and kept the old one. It has the long stud on the bottom as shown in the original post.

It does have 113 stamped on the back. There is also an oval stamping with a curved boxed inside the outline of the oval, with a number, but  just can't make it out.

It is an enameled badge.

Hi Jonny
Thank you for looking… yes, I’ve seen that stamp and I know that it is evident on all genuine badges.. what I wondering if the one in the picture (claiming to be original) is in fact original.. or are there replicas out there.. not painted R107 ones..
I guess I’ll have to keep waiting and watching for a reasonable priced one to come along..

Hi Brennie,

I’m not sure that you can put 113 and reasonably priced in the same sentence.

Vendors and Mercedes are just being ridiculous with some of their prices.

Case in point, one vendor is charging over £400 for a rear cross strut, because it’s NOS, or the other vendor charging $300 USD for a front disc backing plate.

I get that some of these parts are rare, but at what point do prices come crashing down because vendors have become too greedy?

I must admit i had never noticed the w11x in the casting of the bonnet/hood badge. Here is an example

Thank you..
Enquiry made.. I actually wouldn’t mind a used one at this stage.. as long as it’s not too marked..

If your car is a 250/280, I have a brand new left front backing plate here I incorrectly ordered.

I’ve been looking with the help of a local parts guy and I’ve ended up welding the hole in mine and panel beating it somewhat straight as I cannot find one to match my r/h one.

I also have an issue with my engine rebuild at the moment as my car is a late 230 and Mercedes have decided to use 250 conrods in it, talk about minefield. Looks like they just raided the parts bin and fitted whatever they could get their hands on to make it work.

Hi Duncan
Mine is an early 230 ( vertical spare wheel)..
I don’t know if that is compatible…

Plus… it’s a right side I’m looking for…

Definitely not compatible.

Going back to the hood badges, I bought a 107 badge for $25 and found that they are very similar. My original one has small imperfections due to age. The stud from the 107 however, is not threaded and requires a clip instead of a nut.

Yes.. they are almost identical.. one painted, the other enamel.. I have a R107 one but, I’m really holding out for a W113 one.. in fact, my bonnet has no holes drilled for either( I bought it without a badge.. naively … in faith again).. that’s another job… I’m also wondering if they can be fitted/removed without too much trouble or, does it require removing the whole bonnet?

That’s interesting, my new bonnet/hood has the holes already drilled for the badge.

Maybe look from the backside and see if they’ve been filled?

Dirk,

Curious from the picture - it appears that the 107 badge is slightly smaller, is that the case, or is it just the angle/etc of the photo??

Jon,
they both measure 55.6 mm O.D. Its not easy to tell them apart unless you know the difference.
