Post by: PS1971280SL on February 22, 2023, 20:41:08
Hello All

Does anyone know of any Mercedes Benz vintage 600 mechanics in the Palm Springs/Coachella Valley area?

Also, is anyone interested in a 1968 Mercedes Benz 600 SWB VIN#100-012-12-001092, it  has 88,0000 original miles, it is white/tan, needs  some mechanical work. Body and interior are in good condition.

The car is located in Palm Springs, Ca.

Loks like you posted your message here 3 times. I deleted 2 of them. While you ore okay to ask for help on the maintenance mechanic, it is not okay to offer a car without a asking price.

Please list your question about the offer for sale in our Items for Sale forum area and remove the offer here in your post above. You will note that offering a car for sale requires for you to list the asking price or the moderator will delete your post.

Thank you

Dieter

Funny! There is a guy on BaT who claims every chance he has that he is "helping a friend and former employer" to restore a 280SL and next a SWB 600. He hails from palm Springs. Seems to be the same.

My grandfather had a 600 SWB in the same year, circa 1970. Engine went kaput somehow. He swapped a Ford 460 motor into it and later traded it for a front-end loader.

Engine was the same as in the 300SEL 6.3. M100 V8. One of my absolute "dream cars" when I was a younger man.

I've restored 3 of them and have one here right now. These cars are difficult to work on and require skill sets outside of the average MB mechanic. Parts are still available but are very expensive and you need to sit down before you order.

That is what I was told... plus it would have had to go up to Jacksonville (I think), where Mercedes maintained a huge facility. That is 3hr30min these days but was considerably longer back then.

MB won't work on them if they need certain parts which is why we get them in from time to time. If it's not a new MB part or rebuilt by a MB authorized facility the dealers can't touch that part. Air suspension valves fall under those rules and even though they're properly done they still can't use them.

This would have been back somewhere between 1971-1972

The old joke told to me by a former owner was “the reason why the 600 is so spacious is to allow room for your mechanic…”

Very dependable cars once they're sorted out. Nothing drives like a 600. They meet or exceed all expectations.
