Hi
I’m just wondering if a windscreen with a green top tint would have been an original option on my RHD 230 SL.. ?
-
According to the option codes it was available
229 Waermedaemm. Glas, Windschutzscheibe Tinted glass, windshield, 230 SL
Actually reading further, code 595 actually says darker on top, and it may have only been available on 250's and 280's, the option codes don't specify, need to investigate further
595 Waermedaemmendes Glas, Front+Seiten, Bandfilter Tinted glass, windshield and doors, darker on top
-
Doors? I’ve never seen that..interesting..
I have plain clear glass at the moment.. it’s not in very good condition unfortunately.. chipped and the laminate is parting slightly in one corner.. so, I’m looking at alternatives.. green top tint being one of them… I’d prefer clear glass again, but not easy to source…
-
There seem to be a few suppliers of clear glass, but not clear screens with a top band, SL Shop have clear. I'm not sure MB supply them anymore
Seems Sekurit, the original glass manufacturers still have the patterns and can make them to order, no doubt at a price

Found this on an old post, a list of option codes and dates when they were available
https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?action=dlattach;ts=1597504357;topic=31660.0;attach=249262
This seems to indicate that that code 229 was tinted with no dark band, available until 67
The 595 and other codes around this number were available from 67 to 71, so 250's and 280's

My 1966 230 UK spec has the green top band. Screen is original. so must have been an option.
-
Thank you Paul
May I ask, what is the makers name printed on it?
Is it Sekurit by any chance?
-
will check..... just away for a couple of days but that does ring a bell.
-
Thank you…
-
this is mine. Not sure if its an original or not. Can anyone read the codes?
-
It has the correct marking for an MB supplied screen, i think only the data card will tell you if it was original from the factory or not
-
I think Paul99s picture shows a MB aftermarket replacement windshield.
My door windows are tinted. Option code on the data card is 249 in seldom ordered field. 1971 280SL
-
It doesn't look like there has been a definitive answer to what are original and aftermarket screens
The post below seems to have been left without a conclusion

Some pictures of 230 screens would help, i don't know if mine is original, i'll take a look shortly and upload a picture if i can
Picture below, clear screen, no tint, January 1965 car

Bob: I guess the question really is about 230SL, but your picture of the Kinonglass windshield shows exactly what my car has. Original. 1971 280SL
-
Here's what's on my 230. Car is an early '64, no tint, clear glass.
-
That's interesting, seems that Kinon are one of the original manufacturers, never realised my screen might be original
I'll have to protect it with bubblewrap next time i drive it
-
OK, I had to take a picture. Mine looks a little different. 1971 280SL, tinted, laminated glass, green band on top.
-
Pilkington Automotive at Droitwich in the UK have top tinted 113 windscreens on the shelf. I bought blue top tint
-
Thank you for all your interest.. I’d really like to get clear glass.. I wonder if the green top tint has clear glass or green tinted glass at the bottom?…
-
This is what I have at the moment but, it is quite chipped…
