hello
i am trying to find a stateside source for the clamp circled in the picture / #79 in the diagram.
unfortunately i do not have a part number.
i checked online, mb classic center, vintage euro, authentic classics, K&K, old timer, neimoler.
SLS has them but at $21.70 plus vat and shipping is pricey.
thanks in advance
matt

Hello, try one of these part numbers from a previous post about the clips on the main bracket
Main bracket: 129 150 01 73
(from man. engine x0-011122)
(from auto engine x2-003177)
Small spark plug bracket for main bracket: 000 159 01 40
Small vacuum line bracket for main bracket: 001 988 22 78
(listed for Left Hand Drive only)
-
thank you !
-
I just read your post again, i think clip 79 is for the other end of the bracket, a different size clip for a hose, not the one circled in your picture
-
BobH
you are correct!
attached is the schematic for the engine bay brake parts
-
looks like it is 000 988 34 78
sls also has the part individually and in a clamp kit (Set clamps, most wanted for body 113 #299254)
mb classis center has it for 0.70.
-
Matt,
I have a few of these clamps but they won’t fit into the rectangular opening you show in your first picture.
-
Hello, the clip Dirk pictures should do the job, but i don't think it's the correct one, Authentic Classics sell these as well and describe them as used for washer tubing or cable supports
https://www.authenticclassics.com/default.asp
if you look at pictures of "unrestored" cars, many do not have a clip in this position, i wonder if it depends on other factors, year, LH or RH drive etc
This is a later car than yours, but this doesn't have a clip on the left hand side of the bracket

Where did you get the picture of the engine bay in your first post?

Bobh
hi,
thanks for all the replies, that picture came from the motoring investments website.
i go there often for reference pictures.
for now I have e mailed SLS to see if they can provide guidance.
thanks for all the responses!

Guys,
I have a question. What is the clamp in question actually holding?
-
The two sided clamp shown in the first picture is the holder for the early style (black with the cotter key clamps - Behru) brake booster vacuum line. This was switched to the plastic tube in later cars.
The other clamp, with I think several uses for cables and such. Is mounted on the "H" style support at the front and holds/supports the tachometer cable.
At least that is what it does on my cars.
-
The tacho cable clip is slightly different to the clip in Dirk's picture, the actual clip, according to the pictures i've seen and Authentic Classic's shop, is this one
https://www.authenticclassics.com/Mercedes-Tachometer-Speedometer-Clip-190SL-280SL-p/auth-004920.htm
This clips onto a small straight bracket just below the angled bracket with the square hole in it, it can be seen in Matt's first picture. I've never seen anything clipped onto the left hand angled bracket with the square hole. A lot of cars seem to be missing this small bracket, which is bolted onto the H frame, including mine, i think they go missing when parts are sent for plating and don't come back, and so the angled bracket may get used instead for the tacho cable, just a guess
What is the actual cable in Matt's first picture, the top cable above the tacho cable, where should this be routed?
-
Hi
i think the top cable is the oil gauge capillary tube.
-
Hello, i think i've lost the plot here slightly
I'm not sure what cable/hose or bracket you're asking about
The left hand angled bracket on the H holder isn't used for anything as far as i can see on unrestored cars
The straight, bolted on bracket to the right of this angled bracket holds the tach cable clip and tacho cable
The angled bracket on the far right of the H holder has the hose clip fitted and holds the vacuum line (possibly only on LHD drive cars?)
The capillary tube either runs along with the spark plug wires on later cars, which don't have the spark plug wire tube. On early cars i'm not sure how it runs, underneath the tube? what would it be fixed to? if it is fixed? i don't have my car here to check
-
hi BobH
im looking for the clip that is missing on the far left in the attached picture from my car. Circled in yellow
not sure if on my car that clip is correct to hold the capillary tube.
i now know that item 79 from the diagram is the clip that holds the vacuum line for the brake booster
-
Hello Matt, i'm pretty sure the capillary tube isn't held in a clip, it either runs below or alongside the spark plug wire tube, or on later cars without the tube it runs along with the spark plug wires. Edited: There are 2 x clips fitted to the side of the spark plug wire tube, i'm pretty sure these are where the capillary tube is held, if your car has this tube
Most cars don't have anything clipped into the left hand angled bracket, apart from a few late cars i've seen where the vacuum line clips into the left hand bracket because it joins the manifold in a different position
I'm not sure why early cars even had the left hand angled bracket, some do and some don't. My 1965 RHD car doesn't have it
Hope that helps
Bob

I imagine that what clips are used and what they hold is dependent on model (230, 280, etc), year, and perhaps drive side.
This photo is my LHD '66 230SL, and shows the tach cable on the upper left of the H, the vacuum line on the upper right, and what I presume to be the capillary line running through 2 clips on the crossbar of the H.
I would say that #79 in Matt's original post is the clip for the vacuum line. The clip that holds my tach cable on the upper left of the H appears to be the one that BobH has pointed out from Authentic Classics; on my car it does not go through the square/rectangular hole, but just clips over the top of the H bracket.
So Matt, if you like that answer, it looks like you'll be out less that $5!

The oil capillary tube runs from the top of the oil filter canister set up. It runs directly from there to the inlet point on the firewall then to the instrument cluster. It should not be anywhere near that clip.
On the 113 cars, the front square clip of the "H" bracket does not hold anything. The small clip for the tach cable goes just below and slightly to the right.
The black tube may be the temperature gauge capillary, at least on the 250 SL and 230 SL. I think that is the capillary several posters are peaking about? On my 250 SL the temperature capillary runs under the spark plug wires.
For the 280 SL when the temperature sensor was moved to the back of the head, it would run directly from there to the firewall to the instrument cluster.
-
hi, and thanks for all of the replies,
for the 230 sl looks like there are several routing options, not sure which is "correct" if any
-
so, just for fun
i e mailed Gernold at SL tech, he said that clip is not on the 230 sl,
I e mailed motoring investments (where i got the first picture) and their parts guy retired so they could not help.
i e mailed colby MB classic center and he thinks it could be 000 988 33 78
which depending on where you look, SLS vs authentic classics different clips come up. (pictures)
since this clip is not currently on my car i am not going to continue to research this. interesting journey tho
-
i went back to the oudemercedesbrochures website and looked up the brochure for 1966 230sl
its not a great picture but it shows the tach cable routed to that upper left clip.
https://oudemercedesbrochures.nl/W113_230SL_1166engels.html
i guess depending on where in production the cars were there are variations in how things were routed
-
Where did they route the brake booster vacuum line? Between firewall and valve cover?
-
I would be wary of using that photo for guidance on very specific details of the engine bay. This is from the 230 SL advertising brochure, and is early, there are numerous other details that are not correct - the photo is for a initial model/prototype.
