I am getting ready to start my new rebuilt engine from Metric. I was getting up oil pressure without the plugs and found a leak in my oil cooler. I had flushed the cooler with diesel and it seemed clean, however when I drained the cooler to remove it the oil seemed a little dirty. So my question is does the oil from the cooler go through the filter before going into the engine? I will be changing the oil anyway , but I would like to know this.
Also I have read that these coolers do not repair well. Is this correct?

Is it a 280 SL?
There are aftermarket replacement oil-air heat exchangers available.
More difficult with the 250 SL oil-water heat exchanger unit.

Michael, If this is a 280, then yes, I was not able to find anyone who would repair it. I sent it to 2 competent shops for repair.
The original ones are steel I believe.
The replacement cooler I bought from Mercedes was Aluminum I believe.

I have a 280 SL. I have taken the cooler to a local shop and he says it is good to go. We shall see.
I plan on eliminating the factory oil cooler and placing an external oil cooler up in the front fender with a temperature controlled electric fan. I am doing this in order to increase my radiator size since here in Panamá the heat is extreme, I have had overheating problems with my old engine and I like A/C.
Since I found the oil in the cooler to be a little dirty I am concerned with contamination of my new engine and I would like to know if the oil that goes through the oil cooler gets filtered before going into the engine. I changed the oil and filter anyway. I have not run the engine yet, only turning it over without the plugs.
