Title: Automatic gearshift knob…Q? How to remove?
Post by: Bshaunessy on September 12, 2022, 01:02:25
Help pls.  Trying to remove gear shift knob 1970 280 sl, auto transmission.  Knob won’t thread off.  Is there a trick?

It’s not threaded. It’s presses onto the shaft which has ribs or splines. (230, but I believe it’s the same for the 280s)

Photo and description very helpful thx.   Looks like press on / press off process.   Hope the press off doesn’t ruin the metal flutes as I’m replacing black gear shift knob with a used white knob.

I am replacing the knob too. Not sure where you bought yours but the bore in mine is to small and needs to be opened up a bit in order to press it onto the shaft.

I recently bought a auto knob from MB, Its a very tight fit. I used a soft rubber hammer as a helper. I did think about opening the hole up but decided against it in the end
