Hi.
I have a 230SL with a 3.75 ratio diff. Inspite of lapping & replacing the bearings and adjusting the shims etc the noise continues. My engineer says he has the experience, expertise and made the necessary tools required for adjustment & assembly.
We have new crown & pinions of 3.92 and 4.08 ratios available in the market here. Could you please advise if we could replace my 3.75 with these. If yes, which one is preferable?
Will both fit within the space available & what modifications would be required?
I have read all the earlier discussions on the subject but would appreciate a clear answer. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards

The 3:92 and 4:08 should fit. The 3:92 will be closer to your original ratio of 3:75. If you tightened the slotted nut on the pinion too tight, then that may be the reason your 3:75 is making noise.

Thank you so very much for your very prompt response. Will check the nut first.

Are you saying a new ring (crown) and pinion will cure the noise? Are your current gears really that worn out?
Going to a 3.92 will make highway driving even more unbearable.
Unless you have a 5-speed w/OD.

Hi.
Thanks for your response. We are not sure, that's the reason I had asked. Could you suggest what else we should check. Would appreciate your guidance.
