Title: Starting aid simple low cost power monitor
Post by: rosch on June 30, 2022, 05:54:02
After having some ( intermittent) issues with  my 3rd version starting aids   I decided to make a simple checking tool  for quick testing purposes that is dirt cheap.
Objective was  to monitor the electrical power supply and/or activation of the different components in one glance instead of repeatedly using testlights or voltmeters at all individual components.
In my case it made troubleshooting a lot easier....

This is what you  need :

- LED's
- Resistors ( I used 560 Ohms)
- Optional : a piece of PC board
- Wires ( tip : make them long enough  in order to have your tool visible from the inside of your car when starting)
- Banana jacks
- Crocodile clips
- small plastic box

The schematic diagram and photo's are attached. You can make as many testing channels as desired.
It is not limited to testing starting aids , but can also be used for testing   i.e. wiring harnesses  and other electrical components if desired.

NOTE 1 : Using the tool gives you an insight of  electrical issues only. Not mechanical i.e. a clogged CSV !
NOTE 2 : Check that "channels" 1-4 have a different polarity than 5-6 ! !
Channels 1-4 are used to check the +12 V  Voltage at components, 5-6 the ground (-) Voltage.
NOTE 3 : channel hook-ups are suggestions only

Tip : use  banana jacks at the wire ends , it makes your tool more versatile:
One: they fit in the contacts of the relay connectors  for an easy wiring harness check if needed
Two : when used with the crocodile clips you can  clip 'm anywhere

Have fun and good luck with troubleshooting !
