Some may remember last year I had some questions on installing power steering on my 1965 230SL. I was unable to secure a new steering shaft so I used the Jim Villers, detailed approach, and cut my original shaft down to 15.75. I reassembled the s/shaft in the steering column and all went well, eg: with the steering coupling, steering column strap and ignition, until I went to install the steering wheel. When the steering wheel was installed the shaft was flush with the steering wheel spline or approximately 3/4" (the with of the nut) short. Therefore I could not install the nut to keep the steering wheel in place. Would it be helpful, or is it necessary to keep the shaft in place in the column, to install the steering wheel to the shaft / column after it is reassembled and prior to installing in the vehicle? Any and all suggestions would be helpful appreciated.

Not sure if I understand you correctly but the steering shaft relative the the steering column is fixed. Held with retaining rings. The distance it penetrates through the column doesn’t change.

Thank you. You are correct. Something must be keeping he wheel from going into place.

It sounds like your hub is not sitting correctly??
