Title: Turn Signal Differences

I know that the early and late 113s use different turn signal assemblies.  Does anyone know what the actuall difference is?

For reference, the early (230SL) version pushes in from the end to turn the wipers on and off, has a rocker switch for high/low wiper speed, pulls in (towards the driver) for flashing high beams, and pushes away to run the windshield washer pump.  Of course, it also works as a turn signal!  :)

Isn't that the way all SLs work? With the exception of the hi-beam flash feature because my SL is a US-spec car, that's exactly the way my 1970 280 SL's wiper stalk works.

Hi, Doug,

I don't know - I've never even driven a 280.  I thought perhaps something had changed in the later cars, since they definitely have a different part.  Perhaps it was just redesigned?

BTW, because my car was French, the ability to have the fog lights and headlights on at the same time was disabled.  It took me quite a bit of tracing to find the circuit that accomplishes that, and put it back to "standard".

Its the shape of the stalk that changed, and maybe the location on the column where they mount.
Functionally, they work the same, but I don't think they are interchangeable.

I think the later units had lettering/symbols on them too where as the earlier units didn't.

'66 French 230SL

I have a 1970 280SL and it works as you state, except for high beam flashing...have to accomplish that with the foot switch.  Wish mine would flash from the signal.

It can be modified to operate the high-beams, as it was originally intended to do. The US models had this feature de-activated:
