Title: Steering wheel rotational slop
Post by: Tom in seattle on January 27, 2022, 22:09:49
I have immobilized the steering box  and find that my steering wheel has about 3/4 inch movement that must be coming from either in the lower coupling or the u joint that attaches the upper to the lower column.  The Tech Manual also talks about some teflon replaceable parts.  Im wondering if these parts are available for replacement if needed and which of them is most likely the problem.  It seems that whatever it is came on suddenly rather than becoming increasing loose over a longer period of time.  Before i tear it apart, I will appreciate any information, advice and experience you can share. Thanks

Search "steering coupling" and you will find a wealth of information.

While we're on the subject, does anyone know if the U-joint coupling bearings are available, ('70 280SL.) I did a search last night (SLS, Niemöller, Authentic Classics, Buds, and others) and did not find the bearings available.

Cheers and Thank you,
