I`ve been giving the engine a bit of TLC (she has been neglected a bit lately) and I found the following:
Firstly a leak at the base of the dip stick guide tube. I think this tube is just tapped in but I could be wrong. Any way to seal this?
Secondly the bottom bracket of the alternator is held to the block by two studs screwed directly into the block. These have nuts on them. There appears to be oil coming from these studs. Do these studs go right through the wall of the block and could oil be getting past the thread. Would a thread sealer like STAG fix this problem.
Lastly I changed the oil and filter and when I was messing with the oil filter I had a rush of curiosity and removed the large nut on top of the filter to check out the pressure relief valve -oddly there was no spring - should there have been one? - parts diagrams indicated there should be one and what does it mean if there isn`t?
Thanks

I had the same problem with the dip stick tube leaking and it even got lose and sometimes pulled out when I pulled the dip stick.
While I was changing the oil, I degreased the tube and oil pan hole and used J B Weld to put it back in place.
That was years ago and I don't have this problem ever since.
Again, I also had the leak at the alternator bracket. I removed the studs and put them back in with high temp thread sealant. That fixed the problem.
I cannot answer your question about the oil filter without looking it up in the BBB. Perhaps another member can answer quicker.

George, yes there should be a spring (#181 993 06 01) under the screw plug. At the bottom end of the spring should be a valve cone (#181 184 00 30).
Now you have me wanting to go check to see that I have one.
