Title: 5 Speed trans
Post by: gcdpetaluma on November 16, 2021, 00:32:32
I have a ZF 5 Speed from 1966. I don't have a tach and would like to know the approximate "safe" shifting speed(MPH) for 1st, & 2rd gear.

Thank you for your help.

Don't remember this clearly anymore when I drove the ZF 5-speed the last time...
Nothing peculiar.
Between 25 and 40 kms/h I would tend to say.
Depends mainly on engine speed. You do shifting with the ZF based on engine speed/or noise in the same way as you do with every other car.

This might help.  I assume when you are talking "safe" you are talking about limiting your engine rpm.

If so, assuming you have a 4.08:1 differential ratio and stock tire size,  @ 6,000 rpm you would be going 27 mph in 1st gear and 47 mph in 2nd gear.
