It looks like a carpet version of the trunk rubber mat under the spare tire. The holes are for the hardware that hold the jack.

Ahhhh...
Mines an early 230sl with the vertical spare.... No wonder I couldn't work it out.

Or it could be the mat that goes at the end of the drivers foot well. The elongated cut out for the dimmer switch, the round for the base of the accelerator.

That is 100% the pattern of the original rubber mat that goes on the right hand side under the spare tire, for later model cars.

I know this because I just traced one out for the guys at cocomats to reproduce!

It's definitely the boot mat.
They also got the main boot mat incorrect... Pity as getting turquoise carpet was not easy.
