Title: Figuring out Headlights 1970 280sl
Post by: Bagspacked on August 27, 2021, 20:53:37
Hi sorry for such a basic question but I have just got my hands on a 280sl and I’m trying to work out the headlights.

There is a lights dial on the left of the steering wheel. I turn it left and the orange lights come on, then one more turn and what seems to be the high beams. I presume it’s fog lights as a little blue light appears above, also cars seem to be flashing.

I just can’t see an option to turn the headlights on without fog lights

Hello, if the blue light comes on the display it looks like you're on main beam, this is switched on and off by a foot operated switch, have a look in the footwell.  I understand some 280's had integrated fog lights, but i don't think you'd get a blue light warning.  i think the fog lights, if you have them, are switched by pulling the light switch out slightly

Turning left once then twice - parking light left then right (or vice-versa).
Turning right:
- first position - parking lights (all)
- second position - headlights on (long beam - foot switch, blue control lamp))
Pull out and turn right (once or twice): fog lights.

I realized it is very similar om Mercedes cars today - just no foot switch and "A" position added :).
