What is the best oil for the ZF 5 speed gearbox, what does anyone else use ?

I use synthetic ATF.

Support Dan's statement.
This is also what Mercedes recommends. ;)

Thank you, is there a particular make or grade?
-
Hei. I prefer ExxonMobil lubricants. The Mobil1 synthetic ATF https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/for-personal-vehicles/our-products/products/mobil-1-synthetic-atf/ (https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/for-personal-vehicles/our-products/products/mobil-1-synthetic-atf/) covers all Dexron requirements. Talk soon. Martin

I am not convinced. ATF and Dexron are Automatic Transmission spec standards. They are formulated to work on clutch packs and in torque converters. I want to guess that there are better oils for a manual transmission. Would you use ATF in the rear axle?
-
Yes, seems weird but the manual mercedes gearbox including the ZF S5-20 are operating with Automatic transmission fluid. The rear axles are filled with hypoid-lubricant. Talk soon. Martin.

Hey Martin: My mother was born in Büdingen. My sister used to own a hotel/restaurant in Nidda. Sorry for the hijack! Once you get away from home, you realize how small the world really is.
