Does anyone know of a reputable US service center where I can take my 1969 280SL to get the engine and transmission rebuilt?

Metric Motors for the engine and Sun Vally Transmissions for ... the transmission. Both located in CA.

Per Cees' comment below, not only are there "lots of previous discussions" on the topic, but a tremendous number of overall great results from Metric Motors...somewhat less (only in number, not quality) for Sun Valley...so it is unlikely you can go wrong with sending engine to Metric and Trans to Sun Valley.

You just have to get them out of the car in a safe and reliable means, and arrange truck transport!
