I know that there are early and late 250 sl
Does anyone know at what point the early models stopped
Was it vin number? or a gradual change do to parts available?
If so what time or vin number in the production was the change?
I have been looking everywhere for this info and cannot find it
Thanks JN

Vin 2980 is considered the cutoff for early 250’s.

Thanks very much for the info!

why do you ask?

This is funny. I have seen this issue before. For a car that was produced basically for one year, we have a discussion about early and late, and what is "better"....
-
Early is better

But a 280 better still ;)

Debatable, but certainly for resale. I'm intimately familiar with both.

If you go to the tech manual, and scroll down near the bottom there is a listing of Premium Content, one of the listings is for all the copies of Pagoda Notes newsletter.
Volume 10 No4 gives a listing of all the changes to the 250 SL, and the big break at 2980.
These changes were in response to the US Dept of Transportation safety rules that went into effect as of Mid 1967.

I normally don't keep much in terms of magazines or paperwork but I kept the issue of Pagoda World with the 280 running changes. It has helped me many times during the restoration of my car. So much that I have scrawled a big "Do not toss!" across the front of the issue in case my Wife or Daughter decide to clean out my desk someday.
